Lively HIP
(Audience: IPG students and teachers)
For my last School-Based Experience (SBE), I
went to Sekolah Temiang, which is located in Simunjan. To be honest, I did not
expect anything but to gain experience from the school. However, I knew that I
was 100% wrong as soon as I stepped into the school. It was totally opposite of
my expectations. I never went to a school where the Highly Immersive Programme
(HIP) was so lively. In the past SBE, I can say that the HIP was there, but it
seemed dead to me, to be honest.
As I arrived at the school for the first time, I was astonished by the school environment. The school is kind of small and still under construction, but it was colorful and full of informative printed materials in English. The stairs, notice boards, every corner, I can say it everywhere in the school were full to the brim to promote HIP in the school. I never feel so inspired and motivated to do the same things done by the teachers in that school to create a lively English learning environment.
Apart from that, the teachers also conducted interesting activities. There were English morning readings, a visit to Wong Panchur, and an email exchange. The facilities needed for the activities were provided by the teachers. The pupils’ parents were also supportive, as they helped the teachers and their children succeed in the activities. Other than that, the teachers also provided Speaker’s Corner, HIP Corner, and the Movable Speaker’s Corner in the school for pupils to polish their potential and proficiency in using English.
Last but not least, I learned from a teacher who
is so dedicated to her work. She proved to me that as teachers, we must be the
doers to make things happen for our pupils and school. It is okay if we do
things small at first because the most important thing is that we are willing
to take action. The lively HIP environment in the school was the strongest
evidence of her efforts. She had touched my heart and opened my eyes with her
efforts—that being a teacher is never easy, but there are always ways to make
things succeed if only we are willing to do it in the first place.
